Discover The Sweet World of Turrón


Turrón, a traditional Spanish nougat, is a culinary delight enjoyed especially during the holiday season. With its roots deeply planted in the region of Alicante, this sweet treat comes in various textures and flavours, the most renowned being Turrón de Alicante and Turrón de Jijona.


Turrón de Alicante: The Crunchy

Known for its distinctively hard and brittle texture, Turrón de Alicante is a feast for the senses. This variety is also often referred to as “turrón duro” (hard turrón) due to its consistency.

How is it made? The process begins with a mix of high-quality almonds, honey, sugar, and egg whites. The almonds are roasted and then combined with the syrupy mixture of honey and sugar. This blend is cooked and stirred continuously until it reaches the right consistency. It is then poured into molds and left to cool, creating a firm, crunchy slab of nougat that's dotted with whole almonds.


Turrón de Jijona: The Smooth

On the other hand, Turrón de Jijona offers a completely different experience. This variety, also known as “turrón blando” (soft turrón), has a smooth, creamy texture that melts in your mouth.

How is it made? The process starts similarly with almonds and honey, but the almonds are finely ground into a paste after roasting. This almond paste is then mixed with honey, sugar, and egg whites. The mixture is cooked until it reaches a smooth, uniform texture. After cooling, it is formed into bars. The result is a rich, soft nougat that's intensely almond-flavoured, making it a favourite for those who prefer a more delicate bite.

El Campello's Historical Festival El Campello, a charming coastal town on Spain’s Costa Blanca, comes alive every October with one of the most vibrant and historically rich festivals in the region: Moros y Cristianos. This annual celebration, held from October 11th to 15th , is a spectacular display of history, culture, and community spirit, attracting visitors from all over the world. The Moros y Cristianos festival in El Campello is one of the most authentic and vibrant celebrations in the Valencian Community, offering a fascinating glimpse into the region’s historical past. This festival, deeply rooted in the town’s cultural heritage, commemorates the era of Muslim power in the Iberian Peninsula and the battles that shifted control between the Moors (Muslims) and Christians. In El Campello, the festival also pays tribute to the town’s resistance against Berber pirate attacks during the 15th to 17th centuries. A Festival Born from the Sea El Campello’s connection to the sea is evident in the timing of its Moros y Cristianos festivities. Originally, the town celebrated its patron saint, Mare de Déu dels Desemparats, in May, but this conflicted with the fishing season, when many local fishermen were out at sea. As a result, the celebration was moved to October 15th, coinciding with the feast day of Santa Teresa, the patron saint of the local parish. Over time, this religious celebration evolved into the grand Moros y Cristianos festival that we know today, with the first participation of Moors and Christians recorded in 1976. A Festive Atmosphere Leading Up to the Big Day The proximity of El Campello’s festival to the Valencian Community’s major holiday on October 9th extends the festive atmosphere throughout the town. The celebrations blend civic and institutional events with the traditional festival activities, creating a unique ambiance that transports participants back to a bygone era. One of the highlights is the children’s Moorish-Christian parade, which culminates in a reenactment of the conquest of Valencia by King Jaume I, followed by a civic procession that carries the Valencian flag through the streets. Traditional dances also play a significant role, especially in one of the town’s oldest streets, Calle Pal, where couples dressed in traditional attire celebrate the “mocadorá de Sant Dionís,” a custom honoring Saint Dionysius. The Festival Begins: The Night of October 11th The true beginning of the festival is marked by the lighting of artistic illuminations and the reading of the festival proclamation on the night of October 11th. This night is filled with anticipation as the town prepares for the upcoming events. Camps are set up along the Carrer la Mar beach, ready for the arrival of the Moorish forces in the early hours of October 12th. The Landing of the Moors is one of the most dramatic and symbolic moments of the festival. It reenacts the arrival of Moorish troops by sea, who then engage in a battle with the Christian forces of El Campello on the beach. Despite the Christians’ valiant efforts, they are ultimately defeated, setting the stage for the following days of festivities. A Week of Parades, Battles, and Fireworks The days that follow are filled with a variety of events, including the “alardos” (mock battles) and embassies in front of the castle, where the Moors and Christians negotiate and challenge each other. However, the most spectacular part of the festival is the grand parade on the afternoon of October 12th, where the streets of El Campello are filled with vibrant costumes, music, and light as both Moors and Christians march through the town. On October 15th, religious ceremonies are held in honor of Santa Teresa and the Virgen de los Desamparados, bringing the festival to a close. The grand finale is a magnificent fireworks display that lights up the night sky, leaving a lasting impression on all who attend. The Moros y Cristianos festival in El Campello is more than just a celebration; it’s a journey through history, a tribute to the town’s maritime roots, and a vibrant display of community spirit.
